How to Prep a D&D Session Fast
Good session prep is not writing a novel — it is making a short, usable list of the few things that will actually come up at the table. Here is a framework you can run in under an hour, plus how to keep that prep at your fingertips while you play.
Prep the eight things that matter
Skip the page of backstory no one will hear. Instead, jot a few bullets for each of these — most sessions need only a line or two per item:
- A strong start — the first scene that drops the party straight into something.
- A few potential scenes — not a script, just situations that might happen.
- Secrets and clues — ten things the party could learn, in any order.
- Fantastic locations — one or two evocative places with a sentence of sensory detail.
- Important NPCs — a name, a want, and a voice you can do.
- Relevant monsters — what might fight, and roughly how tough.
- Rewards — the magic items or treasure worth finding.
- A clean start and end — a hook in, a question or cliffhanger out.
Keep the checklist in front of you
STRONG START: POTENTIAL SCENES: - - SECRETS & CLUES (aim for 10): 1. 2. 3. LOCATIONS: NPCs (name / want / voice): MONSTERS: REWARDS: NEXT-TIME HOOK:
Reveal, do not recite
The best prep is wasted if you read it aloud. Keep secrets hidden until the moment lands, then reveal them. Quillhold builds this in: every entity has a GM layer and a player-safe layer, so when you reveal a clue at the table it logs itself as something the party now knows — quietly building your players' record of the story.
Run it without flipping tabs
At the table, Quillhold's Session mode puts initiative, HP, conditions, dice, and an SRD encounter builder on one screen, with your prepped scenes and secrets beside the tracker — so a fast prep stays fast to run.
Make next week faster
Because revealed clues, quests, and events are saved as you play, next week's prep starts from what actually happened, and a one-tap recap rebuilds the “previously on” for your players. Quillhold is a buy-once, offline campaign manager for Game Masters — try it free at quillhold.com.
